Types of Dental Crowns

Porcelain Crowns

Made entirely of porcelain, these crowns are highly aesthetic and ideal for restoring front teeth. They closely mimic the translucency and color of natural teeth, providing a seamless, natural look.

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns

PFM crowns combine the strength of a metal substructure with the aesthetic appeal of a porcelain exterior. They offer a balance between durability and appearance, making them suitable for both front and back teeth.

Zirconia Crowns

Zirconia crowns are known for their exceptional strength and natural appearance. They are resistant to chipping and ideal for patients who require a durable solution for their molars.

Gold Crowns

Gold crowns are durable restorations prized for their strength, longevity, and biocompatibility, making them ideal for molars and high-pressure chewing areas.

The Dental Crown Procedure

Getting a dental crown typically involves two visits to our office. This two-step process allows us to provide you with a durable, natural-looking restoration that blends seamlessly with your smile. Here’s what you can expect during each step:

1

Initial Evaluation and Preparation

The process begins with a thorough evaluation by Dr. Stephanie Briggs to assess the condition of your tooth. If a crown is the best solution, the tooth is carefully prepared by removing any decay or damaged areas. The tooth is then shaped to ensure a proper fit for the crown.

2

Taking Impressions

Once your tooth is prepared, we take precise digital or physical impressions of the tooth to create a custom-made crown. These impressions ensure your new crown will fit perfectly with your bite and match the natural look of your surrounding teeth. A temporary crown may be placed to protect your tooth while the permanent one is being crafted.

3

Creating the Custom Crown

Using the impressions, your crown is custom-made from durable, high-quality materials that blend seamlessly with your smile. This process typically takes a couple of weeks, and we’ll ensure it matches the color and shape of your surrounding teeth.

4

Fitting and Bonding the Crown

Once your permanent crown is ready, Dr. Briggs will fit and place it over your tooth. After confirming a perfect fit and comfortable bite, the crown is permanently bonded to your tooth. Dr. Briggs will make any necessary adjustments to ensure the crown feels natural and functions like your original tooth.

When Are Dental Crowns Needed?

Dental crowns are recommended to treat severe tooth decay that has progressed beyond the need for a dental filling. A crown is a long-lasting solution that protects the structure. Similarly, cracked or broken teeth can benefit from a dental crown.

After a root canal, we will use a crown to protect the outside of the treated tooth and restore its strength. Crowns are also used in dental implants to mimic the look of a natural tooth. Some patients may opt to use crowns to improve the appearance of their teeth that are discolored or misshapen.
